Choosing the right size rug for your space doesn’t have to be challenging. A rug is part of your room’s foundation, protecting floors and providing warmth and comfort, and changing your rug can completely change the look of your room (read more about that here). While there’s no wrong way to choose the right size rug, we’ve put together some tips and tricks to help guide you in the right direction:
Living Room
Ideally, your rug should be the anchor for your seating arrangement, with at least 2 legs of your couch and accent chairs on the rug, and at least a 12 inch border between the rug and walls. Larger rugs (9×12 or larger) can provide more cozy ground cover and heavily influence and tie together the elements of your room. Medium rugs (think 8×10) allow you to pull the back legs of furniture off, creating nice conversation spaces while allowing your flooring to shine through more. This size also works well to create natural walking paths, or in open concept spaces with more than one furniture grouping. Small rugs (6×9) let your furniture and floors take center stage, providing accent colors and textures for the room. Make sure, though, that the rug is still a bit longer than your sofa.
Dining Room
For dining rooms, the right size rug extends a minimum of two feet on either side of your table so there’s room to pull out the chairs without pulling the front legs off the rug’s edge completely (most tables need at least an 8 foot wide rug). Does your table expand? Keep this in mind! Round table? Circular or square rugs work best.
Bedroom
The best configuration for a bedroom rug is to either place it under the front two-thirds of your bed, or under the entire bed and nightstands. Avoid a morning cold shock to your feet by extending the rug at least two or three feet on either side of the bed. Don’t want so much rug real estate wasted under your bed?
